A bit more info to help diagnose the problem. Although I didn't see port 8282 occupied in netstat, I rerun setup and changed the JMX port to 7282 (everything else was default). Reapplied license, started the server and I am still getting the same error:

Hi Monika
Can you verify the following lines on your adminserver.config file? An installation with all defaults should look like this:
#The address of the ESD Loadbalancer or an identified ESDnode for RDS communications over http
proxy.esd=localhost
proxy.port=8080
As you are using localhost:7070 and if this lines above look the same on your adminserver.config file then you need to fix the proxy.port from 8080 to 7070. Please be aware that proxy.port does not refers to a web proxy configuration.
Ivan.
Yes, this was the firewall issue (I didn't realize it was enabled by default). After disabling it, I stopped getting error about JMX port and managed to log in to Admin console.
Can you please let me know where are instructions for configuring firewall in Presto? The installation guide mentions firewall as potential cause of login problems but nothing about configuring it in Presto.
Hi Monika,
In my opinion it would be the other way around i.e. Configuring the firewall to allow port numbers that Presto uses to communicate. Windows Firewall has the option to add port numbers. In admin server's case the port number would be 8282 and this should be added to the firewall's safe/allow list.
I also agree that it should be the other way around, but after spending so much time on trying to get the Presto server up and running I just misread your question about Presto being configured for the firewall. :-)
I am finally able to run the tutorial examples provided with the server. Now, if I could achieve the same on Mac (see my thread on Wires composer), life would be sweet.

After running into issues with Wires Composer on Mac OS 10.5, I have installed Presto Server on Windows XP (VMware) with Java 6/Firefox 3. That has solved my problem with Wires, but now I can't launch Admin console. I get login screen: http://localhost:7070/adminserver/jsp/ACLogin.jsp, but when I enter admin user name and password, I get a popup with this message: "No Presto server detected. Please wait & try again". I tried to stop and start the Presto server (as well the repository), cleaned up Firefox cache but no luck. I also see in Tomcat console the following error repeated every few seconds: 2009-02-24 11:20:49,444 ERROR [com.jackbe.presto.jmx.cascade.PrestoMasterAgent-321] -
