In the enterprise, IT faces overwhelming demands for timely and accurate data in the form of easy-to-use applications.  This demand is not surprising considering these enterprise consumers are also commercial consumers who experience an overwhelming influx of applications to help them be more productive in every area of their personal lives.  The vision, of course, is bridging that experience between the enterprise and the consumer world; making it so business users can rapidly find and build applications to solve their challenges.

Of course, there are major issues standing in the way of fulfilling that vision; mainly proper security and governance.  Believe or not, advancements in technologies, such as SOA-like mashup platforms, are bringing that lofty vision to fruition.  To put it another way, a “there’s an app for that” effect is being seen in enterprises that are bold and forward-thinking enough to adopt these types of technologies.

Dion Hinchcliffe, in “The Enterprise App Store and Self-Service IT: How SOA, Saas, And Mashups Will Thrive” recognizes this trend and explains how it is happening.  Read it here
