I’ve been in tech a long time—in roles throughout product management and product marketing—but the most fun thing I get to do every year is still attending my company’s user conference. They’re the best three days I spend professionally every year.

User conferences are fun in part because they’re big love-fests (clients who are mad at you don’t come) and in part because the clients who do come make the trip because they have a specific problem they think we can solve. Sometimes that solution comes in the form of product—but sometimes it comes from a session speaker. Sometimes it comes from a random conversation on the tradeshow floor. Some solutions even come while balancing a plate of hor d’oeuvres and a drink during the evening events.

b2ap3_thumbnail_20131009_090037.jpgSoftware AG’s annual user conference, Innovation World, was unlike anything I’ve attended before. The truly international attendance, the even split between tech-y sessions (showing architecture schematics) and business sessions (showing ROI) and tech-y and business attendees—all of it provided attendees with opportunities to explore the scope of problems they could solve. Plus, the “work hard/play hard” approach made the sessions energizing and the evening events great chances to blow off some steam.

In our last post, “We liked them so much, we bought the company,” Sandra Hamorsky announced that we’ve been acquired by Software AG. A few weeks in and all I can say is the feeling’s mutual. We’re thrilled by the opportunity to roll up our sleeves and get to work as the newest addition to the Software AG family, which includes attending and presenting at Innovation World in San Francisco on October 8-10. There’s a packed agenda and plenty to learn.

b2ap3_thumbnail_InnovationWorld.pngI’m also thrilled to once again share a stage with Audi Lucas from GE Power & Water, a company that truly embodies the Industrial Internet, and not just because of their ability to capture sensor data from “brilliant machines.” GE knows how to make the most of machine data. They understand that this type of data isn’t an island, and that it can provide the most value when it’s supplemented with data from throughout the enterprise to offer in-depth visualizations into broader business operations. In fact, our session, “Powering the Digital Enterprise with Real-Time Visual Analytics,” will explore how GE applies this philosophy using Presto for a customer portal that mashes data from its machine-to-machine monitors with its back-end systems, then uses visual analytics to improve products and service, schedule parts replacement and drive predictive maintenance.
